Rokko Japanese BBQ Hurstville

It feels like every day at the moment there is a new restaurant popping up on Forrest Road in Hurstville. The latest, Rokko Japanese BBQ, only opened it’s doors a couple of weeks ago and has been drawing some big crowds. Having recently come back from a trip to Japan, I’m always keen to fill the void for amazing Japanese food, so of course I had to try it.
I got to the restaurant 6:30pm, and it was already pretty packed, we ended getting seated on the same table as another group, but with our own hotplate. By the time we left there was quite a queue waiting in line – so I suggest get there early if you plan to go before the new hype dies down!
The cute obligatory Tanuki statue

The menu is quite broad consisting of a large range of meats and veggies for the BBQ (including Wagyu beef cuts, various parts of chicken, pork and duck), as well as your typical Japanese dishes (like Chicken Katsu $12.8, Teriyaki Salon $13.8, Agadashi Tofu $6.8) and even a couple of Japanese/Korean style dishes (Korean Style-Chawanmushi $8.8, Stone Pot Yukke Bibimbab w/ soup $15.8).

Chicken with Spring Onion
Of course we have to try the BBQ, so we opt for the Waygu Beef rib ($12.8), Chicken with Spring Onion and Mixed Vegetables($12.8). You get an alright about of meat for your money. You also get a little pot of dipping sauces each that consist of a Ponzu and Sesame oil. The chicken had a slightly sweet flavour to it was really quite delicious. The beef wasn’t a particularly lean cut, which we knew when we ordered it, so it didn’t quite have the melt-in-the-mouth that you get with really expensive Wagyu, but it was still very delicious.

Wagyu Beef Rib - $12.8

Mixed Vegetables - $12.8
The Mixed Vegetables were a nice mix of 3 different kinds of mushroom, pumpkin, corn, onion and eggplant. This was the perfect amount for 2 people.
We also got some Teriyaki Chicken ($11.8) to try as a side, it was very stick and sweet and totally amazingly delicious. We also got a bowl of rice ($2) each, which might not be totally traditional to have with BBQ, but good to fill up on.

Chicken Teriyaki - $11.8
Overall I really liked this place, and although it is slightly more expensive than some of restaurants on the strip, I know I will be coming back regularly.

Chicken Maru Korean Hurstville

Hip hip hooray! There is finally a Korean Fried Chicken restaurant in Hurstville! I'm fighting back tears of joy! This restaurant only opened up a month or so ago, but it is already quite busy. It is hidden away on top of the back end of a pub. It is right next to the bus exchange, upstairs from the Golden Tiger Bar - there are plenty of signs to guide you upstairs.

On the night that me and my husband visited, they told us they were only serving the chicken menu - which was fine by us! It does look like they have an extensive Korean menu, but I will have to go back to try everything. As far as the chicken goes, you will find all the normal varieties and some more interesting ones.
Half Spring Onion ($17) and Half Cheese ($17)
Mmmmm cheese dust....
We decided to go with the Spring Onion and the Cheese. The Spring Onion was our favorite of the 2 - crispy fried chicken covered in a sticky sweet sauce that tasted like wasabi. The cheese was plain fried chicken covered in powdered cheese. We ordered this as it sounded like one of the more interesting combinations, but it was actually much nicer than it sounds.

Complimentary drinks as part of the opening special
The best part of all of this? They are planning to start doing home delivery - so good by arteries!
All of the chicken is $17/$18 for half a chicken, or $32/$34 for a whole.  So totally get on it! No long will we have to venture to eat ALL the KFC!

Ozeki Hurstville

There are a few Sushi Trains in the area, but this is the one that I keep going back to. It's not the cheapest by any means, but it is the tastiest! I go here on a regular basis, but I recommend going when it is busy (so usually Friday/Saturday nights) as although you will have to wait for a seat, there will be a much greater variation. This is a particularly long sushi train is located at the bottom of the Club Central Hurstville, and it is a large restaurant with a train that snakes up and down the room, and when it is quiet they will close the back section of the train off.

Fried Prawn Semi Roll - $3.80
Here you will find all the usual suspects that you would expect to get at any sushi restaurant, but they also pride themselves on having freshly caught fish sashimi, that is marked by the little signs going around on the train. There is also a Japanese menu in case you decide nothing on the train works for you - and everything on there is pretty darn good. The hot pot always seems to be a favorite among many of the patrons (once upon a time they did have a second part of the restaurant that was a straight hotpot train that was amazing! Sadly it did not stay open, but the hot pot to order is just as good).
Grilled Salmon & Scallop - $5.80
The prices for the plates range from $2.80 to $6.80. My particular favorite dish is the Grilled Salmon & Scallop Rounded Sushi which also have avocado in it and a small amount of sweet sauce - totally amazing!

Cooked Tuna & Avocado - $4.80

Tempura Vegetable - $7.80
This particular visit we also had the Chicken Teriyaki skewers (which are very sticky and delicious), Prawn Tempura rolls (that are crispy on the inside and come with a mild tartar sauce), Tuna and Avocado rolls (these are the standard you get everywhere, but the flavour of the tuna wasn't too strong which is nice!) and a plate of Vegetable Tempura (a nice mix of different veggies, all super crispy with ponzu dipping sauce).
